Now that you’ve gotten a new bed, how do you keep it in the best condition? Before you purchase expensive covers or try researching unique cleaning methods, read these simple tips for mattress cleaning and keeping your bed in mint condition night after night.

WHERE TO START

First, visit the manufacturer’s website. Look around for any care tips or suggestions, and make sure you start with those. If your mattress requires specific care, you’ll want to ensure you don’t apply any products or methods that could harm it.

As soon as possible, purchase a mattress cover and if needed, a special allergy mattress cover to help keep irritants out. If you have young children or pets, you may also want to opt for a waterproof mattress pad. The purchase can be well worth preventing wear and damage during the life of your mattress.

SEASONAL CLEANING

These tips don’t have to be followed along with the start of every season, but they’ll be easier to remember if you do them when the weather changes.

CHANGE POSITIONS.

Before plush and pillow tops, we were told to flip mattresses to give them new life. While you can’t flip a pillow top mattress, you can rotate it, which also works well for traditional mattresses. Rotating means simply swiveling the mattress so that where your head was, your feet now rest.

GET THE VACUUM.

Vacuuming works well to remove dust and dander from a fabric surface that’s difficult to access. You may decide to vacuum seasonally, but choosing to vacuum weekly won’t hurt your bed just make sure to use the upholstery brush and take care around any worn areas or delicate details on your mattress. And don’t forget to vacuum the sides of the bed too where dust and other particles can collect.

ON A REGULAR BASIS

SWITCH OUT SHEETS.

Putting new sheets on weekly helps your bed (and bed linens) look and feel fresh. Plus it’ll help keep allergens away from you and your mattress, especially if you share your bed with a dog or cat. If you’ve been diagnosed with environmental allergies, your doctor may recommend changing your sheets even more often to decrease exposure and symptoms.

SPOT CLEAN.

As you strip your sheets, look for any unexpected marks. Especially in a busy household with young children or pets, small stains can happen unnoticed. If the manufacturer has instructions for surface cleaning, follow those. If not, Cleanipedia recommends using a small amount of watered-down dish soap as a stain remover, after testing to ensure it doesn’t discolor or otherwise damage the bed.

DON'T FORGET PILLOW TOPS!

ONE MORE REASON FOR MATTRESS CLEANING

In case you’re not already convinced that mattress maintenance is important, a cleaner, fresher mattress can help you sleep better. Clean sheets, less dust, and a fluffier surface will help you feel more comfortable when you turn in for the night.
